Clore Fellow Eva Martinez On the Difference that her Fellowship Made

Leadership comes in different shapes and sizes, and is not about power or the typical top-down leader/follower dynamic.

Eva Martinez is Artistic Programme Producer at Sadler’s Wells

I often use the analogy of what a Pilates class does to your body to describe my experience of the Clore Fellowship year. If you have ever tried Pilates you’ll be familiar with the slowing down of movement and focus that it requires. You discover new muscles you never knew you had and strengths that you have taken for granted because you are too busy to notice. The analogy doesn’t say it all, but it captures how it felt for me. I found my Clore Leadership year incredibly fulfilling, it created space to think in my life and a shift in perspective about my relationship to work and life. Working in the arts can be very intense. Clore allowed me to take a step back, recharge and get to know myself better. It made me a more confident and resilient person, and a better listener. Fundamentally, I realised that leadership comes in different shapes and sizes, and is not about power or the typical top-down leader/follower dynamic; it is about authenticity, courage and giving space to doubt.
