Governance Now, our annual conference presented to you by Clore Leadership and the Cultural Governance Alliance (CGA) exploring the critical issues in cultural governance, returns as an in-person event* from 09:45 – 18:00 on Wednesday 8 February 2023 at Midlands Arts Centre, (MAC) Birmingham (Registration opens from 09:00 at MAC on the day).
This year’s edition of the Governance Now conference explores place-making and civic agendas in the cultural sector and the vital support required from boards and trustees. The need for cultural organisations to respond to topical debates, social issues and local need has never been more urgent, with those involved with governance at the heart of the response. From the cost of living crisis to the ongoing impact of Covid, and with political pressure for the cultural sector to work harder at reaching broader communities, the pressure on boards has never been greater.
2021 saw the return of Governance Now for its fourth annual conference for cultural sector trustees and professionals, presented by Clore Leadership on behalf of the Cultural Governance Alliance (CGA) in association with Inc Arts and Arts Council England.
The 2021 conference took place online and invited delegates to navigate through conversations on Race and Decolonisation, Sustainability and Climate Emergency, and Ableism and Disability in relation to their governance priorities, practices and cultures.

Governance Now 2020 was delivered across two-hour sessions every Thursday in November. The conference was sponsored by Saxton Bampfylde and promoted by the Cultural Governance Alliance, a network of sector agencies led by Clore Leadership.
Key themes for the 2020 conference included: responses to crisis; adaptive governance; engaging with diverse communities; reappraising organisational values; and the future of governance.
The programme also included breakfast networking sessions and offered opportunities to engage in deeper conversation with other trustees from across the sector.
Returning after sell-out success in 2018, the 2019 conference brought together a wide range of expert speakers to share insights and best practice to help you get ahead in the art of achieving good governance.
The conference focussed on practical solutions to common problems, with top tips and shared experiences on how to create and maintain a high performing board. Session themes tackled common knotty issues around governance structures, strategies and day-to-day relationship management.

On 13th November 2018, the Clore Leadership in partnership with the Cultural Governance Alliance presented Governance Now: a national conference for arts and culture sector professionals and trustees.
A sell-out gathering of attendees, speakers and facilitators came together to be part of positive culture change by becoming more aware, connected and empowered to address the challenge of achieving good governance.
Planned within Trustees Week 2018 Governance Now marked a sea change - a deliberate and decisive raising of our collective game as cultural leaders – an opportunity to enhance the conditions for a resilient and relevant cultural sector. The conference promoted good governance practice across a wide range of subject areas, to support cultural organisations to operate at their very best, with boards and trustees able to be stronger, better informed and better equipped to demonstrate excellent governance in practice.
