Executive Director Hilary Carty awarded OBE in Queen’s Birthday Honours
Clore Leadership would like to extend our congratulations to all those recognised for their contributions to the arts, cultural and creative sector in the Queen’s 2021 Birthday Honours List, through what has been one of the most challenging times for the sector.
In particular, we would like to offer our greatest congratulations to our Executive Director Hilary Carty, who has been awarded an OBE for services to Leadership Development in the Cultural and Creative Industries.
With a background in arts leadership and cultural change, Hilary joined Clore Leadership in September 2017 and since joining the organisation, has been instrumental in driving the ongoing empowerment and celebration of great leadership across the arts and culture sector.
Despite a year of dramatic shifts, Clore Leadership has been able to find dynamic and resourceful ways to support the sector through the Covid crisis, actively engaging with over 2,600 people online in the past year alone, in addition to those who independently drew on the enhanced range of Clore Leadership resources. By developing and delivering new and responsive programming and pivoting engagement online, Clore Leadership continued to stimulate and meet the ever-evolving needs of leaders today.
Hilary has expanded Clore Leadership’s significant repository of leadership learning, research and opinion, in order to inspire and equip leaders to have a positive impact on society. At the heart of Clore Leadership’s values is an aspiration to achieve a rich, diverse and representative cultural sector. It has championed new inclusive programming strands, focusing on the multiple perspectives and experiences of the full range of the UK’s diverse leaders, as well as developing new learning zones where D/deaf, neurodiverse and disabled leaders, as well as those from Black, Asian and ethnically diverse backgrounds, can more readily see themselves reflected.
With over two decades working in the leadership development space, this award also recognises Hilary’s role in setting up the UK Cultural Leadership Programme in 2006, expanding the range of leadership opportunities for the widest range of sector workers, as well commissioning key research into specific issues impacting the sector such as Governance in the arts and Women in Leadership. She also has an enviable track record as a mentor and coach, particularly for women moving into and through leadership roles.

We would like to acknowledge the contribution made by our many alumni, colleagues and partners and will continue to ensure that we are playing our part to build our leadership bridge to future sustainability in the year ahead, particularly as the cultural sector faces its toughest times responding to the ongoing impact of the Covid pandemic.
