Julia Twomlow

Rothesay Pavilion, Artistic Director/Associate Facilitator

I am Director of the Leach Pottery in St Ives, Studio and Museum, a heritage and educational charity with a strong commercial element. I was appointed in 2008 and have overall responsibility for the leadership and management of the organisation including strategic direction and vision.

I was one of the first cohort of Clore Fellows (2004-05) and since 2006 have worked as a regular Facilitator on the Clore Leadership Programme short courses and Board Development programme.  I am an Associate of the Museums Association and a member of the Women Leaders in Museums Network.

From 2006-08, I worked Project Development Consultant for the creative sector with clients including Kneehigh Theatre, Heartlands, Incandescence Circus Company, St Ives Society of Artists, Krowji and Newlyn Art Gallery.  I carried out a major study ‘Counting on Creativity’ which investigated the impact of the Objective One funding on the creative industries in Cornwall and was used to inform Cornwall Council’s cultural strategy.

Previously I was a performer and puppeteer, a venue manager and promoter for music and theatre, a festival programmer and I led on the fundraising and rebuild of the Acorn Theatre in Penzance, one of the first Arts Council lottery projects.

I am a new Trustee of Craftspace in Birmingham and Deputy Chairman of the Trailblazers Craft Apprenticeship Panel which informs the new national standards for apprenticeship delivery. I am a part time PhD student at Falmouth University in the area of the history of craftsmanship. I have a particular interest in new business models for cultural organisations that enable them to be mission focussed at the same time as being viable environmentally and financially, and arts organisations/artists that seek to work beyond their boundaries in order to affect positive social change.
