Willingly or not, I think we can say we are getting accustomed to living with volatility. Whether it’s the unprecedented high temperatures, excessive energy costs, or the unpredictable political arena, many have watched things unfold with a sense of wonder, if not awe. Who is in control? Where are we heading? Why do it that way? How? When? Huh…?! Living with volatility is hard, leading in volatile times even harder. You can but admire the consummate resilience of our cultural leaders who, despite it all, envision, plan, execute and engage – stimulating visitors, audiences and participants with ingenuity and imagination, all against a backdrop loaded with challenge and complexity. At Clore Leadership, our Covid journey reinforced the value of astute and careful consideration – deep listening, simple questions and timely responses - with smart solutions. Time remains precious; attention feels like a gift; creativity is key. Such sentiments we heard time and again as we interviewed for our new cohort of Clore Fellows – it’s a tough selection process but for us it also provides the clearest insight into the aspirations and challenges of leading contemporary culture in an unpredictable world. So amongst that volatility, must come ‘care’ and ‘compassion’ – words not commonly aligned with leadership in previous generations, but now critical to acknowledge, advocate and demonstrate. Just as the workplace, working practices and the workforce itself is shifting post pandemic, so too must leadership shift to accommodate today’s issues and challenges. There are no set or easy solutions, but at Clore Leadership we are fortunate to be at the heart of conjuring the how’s and why’s of leadership support. What do contemporary cultural leaders need? We’d love to hear from you. Do respond with your thoughts and help us ensure we get it right. Hilary Carty, Executive Director, Clore Leadership
