Welcome to Lead On – the quarterly newsletter from Clore Leadership, which seeks to explore, stimulate and share perspectives on the issues currently impacting the leadership of culture.
The day after I sent everyone home to work and closed the office, I reached out, instinctively and urgently, to my cohort of Clore Fellows. As the world spun out of control and the scale of the emergency response that was needed started to reveal itself, connection felt vital. My note said that up and down the country, the impact was going to be harsh, for people and for organisations alike. Leadership of a type I could only really begin to imagine was going to be needed from all of us – and that an online community of people I’d known and who know me might be really important in the coming months. That support is a powerful force. It’s a cliché that it’s lonely at the top, but all over the UK cultural leaders are making tough decisions - shutting their doors to protect their visitors, audiences, and staff; finding ways to minimise the impact on livelihoods; re-purposing plans and re-thinking business models. We expect our leaders to engage with courage and resourcefulness, and then to act. Clore Leadership stands alongside you all, offering advice, support, touchpoints and inspiration online, listening to what you need and working hard to source that for you. And when we re-emerge, we will judge our contribution by the strength of the connections that have endured, the resilience shown and by the creativity that is brought to bear by our leaders in imagining our new normal and the role arts and culture have to play. In this issue of Lead On we are looking at leading in and through a crisis; offering news, information and resources during these uncertain times. Please do look after yourself in the same way we are sure you are looking after others and continue to follow Government and NHS guidance around social distancing and caring and supporting friends and neighbours. Join the conversation by emailing us or reaching us on Twitter @CloreLeadership and stay #CloreConnected! Moira Sinclair, Chair of Clore Leadership
