Welcome to Lead On – the newsletter from Clore Leadership, which seeks to explore, stimulate and share perspectives on the issues currently impacting the leadership of culture. Dark mornings, frost on the windows, crisp air and fresh morning dew – it's January! And the season is already sending its signals of change. We know we have yet to feel the full force of winter, but the brilliant clear sunshine in the middle of the day seems almost to defiant in its optimism and ‘promise’ of spring - on the horizon – coming through – just hold on… That seems to reflect our challenge as we anticipate a third year ‘with Covid’. How extraordinary to look ahead and still face entrenched uncertainty in the immediate future? What rationale for planning when the rules change with no notice, the challenges loom large and unanswered, and the options are simultaneously unclear and stark? It’s a time for calm, generous and collaborative leadership. Harnessing the perspectives of the many to determine options for the few; focusing on what matters, and that which will make a positive contribution to our drive, ambition and mission. Simple questions are dynamite:
• Why? and why now? • Who? and with whom? • What? And what not? The reality check of the pandemic stopped us all in our tracks and forced some hard realisms our way. We are changed. And changing… creating new norms, ways of being, working and planning that must, of necessity, contain inherent flexibility and plenty of room for manoeuvre. The optimism of the New Year is a source of courage and motivation – resolutions, ambitions, dreams. Let’s let that fuel our creativity and leadership, and face outwards again.
Read on to see information and insights, and some tools and suggestions for starting the year with momentum.
