Welcome to Lead On – the newsletter from Clore Leadership which seeks to explore, stimulate and share perspectives on the issues currently impacting the leadership of culture. At last… brighter days, longer daylight - Spring is here! And, with lockdown measures easing across the UK, who can resist planning for potentially excessive cultural participation in the months ahead? It's just glorious to see the announcements for theatres, concert halls, venues, museums and the full panoply of cultural life coming forward in all their glory. Except, it is not quite the full panoply… not all the culture we have known and loved has made it through this most extraordinary of years, and many who have are working in new ways, serving different audiences and finding fresh angles to cast the programming pivots of 2020 into the slip-stream for the period ahead. Spring - renewal - growth - transformation… There is energy and aspiration in the air. We spoke to Jess Turtle, Co-Founder of Museum of Homelessness, a small and dynamic creative organisation just establishing itself when Covid-19 demanded a change of course:
“We took huge risks during the pandemic, setting up an emergency aid hub with so many unknowns… It paid off because I think we literally saved lives and, in addition, our organisation has developed so brilliantly through it… I think if you take the right risk, in the right way, at the right time, people come with you.” Read the full interview with Jess here.
April is also Stress Awareness Month - a reminder to tap into a healthy range of support networks and resources, so that your leadership pathway can withstand the bumps, hurdles and twists so often unforeseen. It has been a challenging year - how might we make sense of what has occurred and draw strength from those experiences we had not planned, but through which we have built new potential? - What do you know now that you didn’t last spring? - How will you hold the space between the lessons of the past and possibilities of the future? - With courage and compassion, how might you explore the tensions of difference and challenges for change? - And, knowing your purpose, how will you nurture curiosity in the present, to open doors for the future? We are moving forward - let’s summon our energies for the potential there is to come. #BeTheChange.
