Welcome to Lead On – the newsletter from Clore Leadership which seeks to explore, stimulate and share perspectives on the issues currently impacting the leadership of culture. New Year, new resolutions, fresh thinking is my usual script. But entering this January, the anticipation of leaving the past behind and stepping forward with hope has clashed with the restrictions of lockdown. The start of 2021 just doesn’t have the bounce that would usually propel us into the spring. As leaders we set the compass direction and start towards shared aspirations and goals. The wind might change, we might get blown off course, but we pause, rest, and re-navigate to proceed, trying to ensure no-one is lost or left behind, and that messages are truly shared, not just shouted into the wind. The cumulative toll of 2020 means that many are exhausted, digging deep to find new depths of personal resilience. From where will come the energy to pivot, yet again? To plan, and shift, then shift once more, sensing always that it is not the last iteration? Are quick decisions better than good decisions? By what yardstick do we measure effectiveness, and impact, when there is scarcely time to review, before the next demand looms urgent and large? In a world where everything feels it should be instant - next day delivery, live media streams, 24-hour news - it becomes hard to create the space to stop... to reflect… to genuinely think. But leadership requires reflection, dreaming and future gazing. And planning ahead reaps positive rewards, even when control is fragile. So I’m facing this New Year, with one resolution – permission to think. Even when time is short. And from the thinking will come the ideas, which create the options, that spark the energy - to pivot once more… Let’s dance in 2021! Hilary Carty, Executive Director, Clore Leadership
