Welcome to Lead On – the quarterly newsletter from Clore Leadership, which seeks to explore, stimulate and share perspectives on the issues currently impacting the leadership of culture.
Festivals have been part of culture for thousands of years, celebrating the changing seasons, local and national identity and religious rituals. Nowadays an arts or cultural festival can be a vehicle to bring together artforms and ideas under a theme or in a particular region; allowing audiences to experience exhibitions, performances, discussions and activities as part of their local cultural offering, a visit to a neighbouring county or an excursion further afield. As you'll read in our Brain Fuel articles, festivals can breathe new life into a local economy and prolong the careers of artists as well as tackling the global issues of the day, with a theme emerging over the course of a festival, such as climate change at this year's Edinburgh Fringe. We're also delighted to shine a spotlight on Clore 15 Fellow Kate Craddock who set up GIFT Festival in Gateshead in 2011. Read on for an array of events, training and opportunities as well as a round up of cultural news. We'd particularly like to draw your attention to Governance Now, the flagship national conference for cultural sector trustees and professionals, led by the Cultural Governance Alliance, happening in London on Friday 8 November 2019. Last year's sell-out conference was an amazing event and we'd love you to be part of a positive culture change, empowered to address the challenges of achieving good governance. This year we are particularly excited to bring you keynotes from Ros Kerslake, Chief Executive, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the chair of our own Board, Paul Hamlyn Foundation CEO, Moira Sinclair.
