Change is in the air. The ‘only constant’ as the saying goes. And, oh my, how constant that is! Events, interventions, emergencies – all beyond (out of?) control. Could we just settle things down for a minute? Embrace ‘consistent’ and ‘predictable’ as ways of experiencing the world? Tracking back, it is notable how often the issue of ‘resilience’ has featured in our narratives, with strategies and perspectives to gain equilibrium and find the energy to meet whatever challenge. Do we need a new word? A new approach? Fresh thinking?
One of the distinct benefits of reviewing the applications for our programmes each year, is the opportunity to gather key threads of the thinking, seeing and doing that is topical for sector professionals. Over time the emphasis undoubtedly shifts, capturing the rise and fall of trends, aspirations, concerns and opportunities. Core narratives of care, complexity, and allyship ripple through the ever-present mix of personal and interpersonal dynamics of leading people, managing projects and supporting organisations. Some cast their gaze wide to take in global narratives, others focus inward to explore their own feelings and beliefs. But almost all reflect on the challenges of change – societal, systemic, institutional, personal. Too much, too little, too fast, too slow. But constant...
Finding time and space for reflection brings huge rewards, as does making time to connect with others – friends, family, colleagues, peers. Our alumni share often how connecting with their cohorts brings an intangible boost and sense of belonging. Such exchanges, whether formal or informal, offer different windows on the world. Different angles and perspectives, that might just be the inspiration needed to see a new way forward.
One thing that is more often within our control is how we see and attend to others. This too is a power, and a gift. Connect, share, talk things through. And listen well. Giving time and attention is a two-way source of wellbeing – and could make a positive difference just through that intangible exchange. Give generously and often...
