Claire Antrobus

Coach, facilitator, trainer and consultant

I am an independent consultant and coach specialising in organisational and leadership development. Based in York I work with a portfolio of projects around the UK in the creative and cultural sectors but also universities, local authorities, schools, charity sector and social enterprise. I work with organisations of all scales from national institutions such as Tate, Royal Opera House, Arts Council England, Creative Scotland and British Council through to artist-led projects and volunteer-run museums.

I began my career in curatorial roles at Leeds City Art Gallery and Yorkshire Sculpture Park before moving into arts funding and development with London Arts Board/ Arts Council England and then as Head of Arts at the British Council in France. I have also worked extensively with social enterprises and developed a specialism in business models and resilience within non-profit sector. In June 2005 I became Head of Sustainable Funding for the National Council of Voluntary Organisations. Within 12 months I secured funding of £1.5 million and grew annual income from £300K to £500K.

Since moving to York in 2007 I have worked as an independent consultant with a range of regional, national and international cultural organisations including: West Yorkshire Playhouse, the Tetley, Ripon Museum Trust, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Tate, Creative Scotland, British Council Australia, Royal Opera House, London Borough of Richmond, University of Leeds, Southend Borough Council, Middlesbrough Council, University of the Arts London, Arts Council England, Cumbria Museums Consortium, Yorkshire Dance, The Hepworth Wakefield and Turner Contemporary.

I undertook my Clore Fellowship in 2009/11 shortly after having my two children and deciding to work part-time - which I still do. During my Fellowship I undertook research into joint leadership models (Artistic and Executive Directors), looking at why collaborative leadership was necessary and what enables effective partnerships at the head of organisations.

Since completing my Clore Fellowship in 2011, I have also held senior interim management roles at Tate Liverpool (2011-12) and Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (2012-2013). In 2017 I was awarded the honorary title of Visiting Research Fellow by the University of Leeds where I contribute to postgraduate teaching.
