What is the Clore Emerging Leaders Course?
An intense, five-day residential course providing you with the essential knowledge and skills needed to take the next steps as an emerging cultural leader. Since 2011 we have run five Emerging Leaders courses aimed at people in the early stages of their careers. You can read what people have said about the course here.
Who can apply?
Ambitious, creative individuals who aspire to lead and make a difference to the cultural sector and the world at large. You should have two to five years' paid experience in the arts, museums, or libraries sector and some experience of initiating and/or managing projects. The majority of participants are between the ages of 21 and 30. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a genuine desire to lead. The course is suitable for those working for organisations, freelance artists and independents. We are looking for applicants from as wide a range of backgrounds and specialisms as possible. What will I learn?
Sessions are led by experts from across the cultural and corporate sector who are visionary leaders, thinkers, entrepreneurs, artists, researchers and academics. The evenings are taken up by talks from leaders who share their personal and professional journeys through the sector and illustrate different models of leadership.
Our exact programme varies from course to course but for reference, here are some examples of sessions from previous Emerging Leaders courses: Managing & Influencing People, Presentation, Governance, Coaching, Lobbying and Communications.
How will I learn?
The course provides a supportive environment in which participants are given an introduction to leadership development and the opportunity to challenge themselves and their perception of leadership.
We understand that people learn in different ways and the course reflects this. It blends practical skills and tools, real-life examples and individual and group learning. There are also opportunities to listen to cultural leaders talk about their experiences of leadership, and what they have learned along the way. Sharing and learning from each other is strongly encouraged.

How much does it cost?
Most places on the Clore Emerging Leaders course are subsidised and cost £500 + VAT; the full cost of a place is £2,000 +VAT. You are eligible for a subsidised place if you work in the arts and museums or libraries sector in England, and are committed to developing your career as a cultural leader in England (the course is supported by Arts Council England, through a grant to develop sector leaders, and Esmée Fairbairn Foundation).
We offer a number of bursaries for this course to eligible applicants.
