Emerging Leaders

"It has been a much deeper experience that I expected. I have learned so much about inner strength and resilience and staying true to my core values and beliefs. It has been inspiring to be surrounded by such talented and brilliant peers, and to hear from established and successful leaders."

Applications are now closed for the Emerging Leaders March 2015 course.  We will advise all applicants of the outcome during week beginning 15 December 2014.

What is the Clore Emerging Leaders Course?

An intense, five-day residential course providing you with the essential knowledge and skills needed to take the next steps as an emerging cultural leader. Since 2011 we have run four Emerging Leaders courses aimed at people in the early stages of their careers. To read what people have said about the course, please click here.

Who can apply?

Ambitious, creative individuals who aspire to lead and make a difference to the cultural sector and the world at large. You should have between two to five years' paid experience in the arts, museums, or libraries sector and some experience of initiating and/or managing projects. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a genuine desire to lead. The course is suitable for both those working for organisations, freelance artists and independents. Click here to read more about the attributes we look for in a potential leader. We are looking for applicants from a wide as possible range of backgrounds and specialisms.

How will I learn?

The course provides a supportive environment in which participants are given an introduction to leadership development, the opportunity to challenge themselves and their perception of what leadership is.

We understand that people learn in different ways and the course reflects this. It blends practical skills, tools and real-life examples and individual and group learning. There are also opportunities to listen to cultural leaders talk about their experiences of leadership, and what they have learned along the way. Sharing and learning from each other is also strongly encouraged.

What will I learn?

Sessions are led by experts from across the cultural and corporate sector who are visionary leaders, thinkers, entrepreneurs, artists, researchers and academics. The evenings are taken up by talks from leaders who share their personal and professional journeys through the sector and illustrate different models of leadership.

Our exact programme varies from course to course but for reference, here are some examples of sessions from previous Emerging Leaders courses: Managing & influencing people, presentation, governance, coaching, finance, lobbying and communications.

What difference will the course make to you?

“The Emerging Leaders Course is life-changing!” Eleanor Pulfer

By attending the course you will:

  • Grow in confidence around your own leadership ability
  • Increase your career motivation
  • Understand different leadership styles better
  • Gain greater self-awareness
  • Acquire some practical tools and skills
  • Build a stronger support network of fellow emerging leaders to share experiences with and brainstorm problems together

How much does it cost?

The Clore Emerging Leaders course is supported by Arts Council England through a commissioned grant to develop resilient leadership. Thanks to this grant, places supported by this award cost £500 + VAT.

We are offering bursaries for this course. Click here for more information.

We actively encourage applications from disabled emerging leaders as they are underrepresented in our courses and the cultural sector at large.

As our recent Scoping Survey indicated, cost is a key barrier to disabled people accessing leadership training therefore the Clore Leadership Programme will waive the course fee for Disabled emerging leaders from England who successfully secure a place on the Emerging Leaders Course. Successful participants will only be required to cover their travel to and from the course. For a working definition of disability please refer to Arts Council England's Disability Equality Scheme report.
